Kolkata, June 8 (IANS) The Sainthia Municipality in Birbhum district on West Bengal was dissolved on Monday after 14 Trinamool Congress councillors, including the chairman, resigned from their posts.
The chairman, vice-chairman and 12 councillors of the Sainthia Municipality submitted their resignation letters to the Suri Subdivision Administrator, alleging that “the common people have rejected the Trinamool”.
This is the first time that the board of a municipality among the six municipalities in Birbhum district has been dissolved.
There are 16 councillors in the Sainthia Municipality. In the last municipal elections held on February 27, 2022, Trinamool Congress candidates won 13 out of 16 seats unopposed. Elections were held in the remaining three seats, and Trinamool candidates won those as well. As a result, the Sainthia Municipality had no Opposition.
The chairman of the municipality was Biplab Dutta and the vice-chairman was Kazi Kamal Hussain.
On Monday, 14 councillors, including the chairman and vice-chairman, submitted their resignation letters to Suri Subdivision Administrator Supratik Singh.
Councillor Manas Singh of Ward No. 3 and Councillor Maya Saha of Ward No. 9, however, did not resign.
With the resignation of the majority of its members, the municipality was dissolved.
Incidentally, there are a total of six municipalities in Birbhum district. Bolpur, Suri, Rampurhat, Dubrajpur and Nalhati municipalities are still under the control of the Trinamool Congress. Only the Sainthia Municipality was dissolved on Monday.
Resigning from the posts of chairman and councillor, Biplab Dutta said: “We had won with the symbol of Trinamool. But this time in the Assembly elections, people have rejected the Trinamool. Today, I cannot find out which is the real Trinamool Congress. So I resigned. It is a completely personal decision.”
Resigning from the post of vice-chairman, Kazi Kamal Hossain said: “My wife has been bedridden for 15 years. I am also sick, so I resigned.”
However, the rest of the councillors said that they resigned because of physical illness.
In this context, BJP MLA from the Sainthia Assembly constituency, Krishna Kant Saha, said: “Everyone is impressed with the way the newstate government is carrying out public welfare work under the leadership of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. That is why everyone is resigning from Trinamool. That party will no longer exist.”
