1904-05 land record testament to Kamakhya’s eternal legacy: CM Himanta Sarma

Guwahati, Aug 22 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday described a historic land record dating back to 1904-05 as a significant testament to the enduring spiritual and cultural legacy of Maa Kamakhya and the Sanatan civilisation.

Sharing details of the century-old document on social media, Sarma said the record was much more than an old land document, describing it as evidence of the deep-rooted faith, history and traditions associated with the Kamakhya Dham.

“This document is not merely an old land record, but rather a testament to the eternal power of Maa Kamakhya and the living legacy of the Sanatan civilisation,” the Chief Minister said in a post translated from Hindi.

He said the historic record, preserved from the period of 1904-05, encapsulates the centuries-old traditions and faith surrounding the Kamakhya temple, one of the most revered Shakti Peethas in India. According to Sarma, the document offers an important historical link to the religious and cultural traditions that have continued to shape the identity of Kamakhya Dham over generations.

The Chief Minister emphasised the need to preserve such historical records and ensure that the heritage associated with the Kamakhya temple is protected for future generations. “Preserving this invaluable heritage of the Shaktipeeth Maa Kamakhya and passing it on to future generations is our resolve,” he said.

The Kamakhya temple, situated atop Nilachal Hill in Guwahati, is one of the most prominent pilgrimage centres of the Hindu Shakti tradition and attracts devotees from across the country and abroad. The temple is particularly associated with the worship of Shakti and holds a distinctive place in Assam’s religious, cultural and historical landscape.

Sarma’s remarks come amid the state government’s broader emphasis on preserving Assam’s cultural heritage, religious sites and historical traditions while undertaking infrastructure and development initiatives around major pilgrimage destinations.

The Chief Minister’s post also highlighted the significance of archival records in documenting the continuity of religious institutions and traditions over the decades.
